South America Memoirs 🍂

Samatvam 🌿 — A Sanskrit word from the Bhagavad Gita that is often translated as equanimity.

Not the absence of emotions.

Not indifference.

But the ability to remain inwardly balanced despite the countless small ups and downs of everyday life.

Someone recently explained it in a way that stayed with me:

“Protect your emotional currency.” 💚

Spend it wisely.

Don’t spend it on every inconvenience, every delayed flight, every small disappointment, every little decision. Save it for the moments that truly deserve it.

Standing in Buenos Aires 🇦🇷 on a cold, rainy Saturday evening, around 5 p.m., with a small shopping bag in my hand containing a sweater and a magnet, I suddenly understood what that meant.

A few minutes earlier, I had been wondering whether I sometimes prioritize others more than myself. My mind, as always, wanted to analyse everything.

Then I paused. 🌱

Did this really deserve so much of my emotional energy?

The answer was no.

I still had a lovely magnet.

I still had a tango performance waiting for me that evening.

I was still in Argentina—my 40th country. 🌎

Only the day before, I had stood speechless before Iguazú Falls, overwhelmed by one of the most beautiful sights I had ever witnessed.

Surely those were the moments worthy of my emotional currency.

Not every passing inconvenience.

Perhaps this is what Samatvam means to me. 🍃

Not becoming less emotional or less generous.

But becoming more intentional about where I invest my heart.

Life is too precious to become emotionally exhausted by every small wave.

I would rather save my deepest emotions for waterfalls, meaningful conversations, laughter with friends, quiet cups of tea, gratitude, love, and moments that remind me…

“I am blessed.” 🤍

Because,

Brazil gave me wonder.
Argentina gave me perspective.
Now, with a heart a little lighter and a mind a little quieter, I look forward to the next adventure…

Machu Picchu.
